In terms of government structure in 2012, Russia was a semi-presidential republic with an elected president at its helm. The government had seen some economic growth since 2000 due to increased foreign investment which led to job creation and higher wages for citizens. Education was also given priority by the government with initiatives such as free primary schooling being implemented across the country. Additionally, healthcare services were improved through public-private partnerships which allowed more Russians access to quality medical care than ever before. Despite this progress, poverty remained widespread throughout much of Russia due to corruption and economic mismanagement by past governments as well as poor infrastructure and lack of resources. The majority of Russians are Orthodox Christians. Russia has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The economy of Russia is largely service-based, with its main exports being oil and natural gas, machinery and equipment, chemicals and metals. Agriculture also plays an important role in the Russian economy with crops such as wheat, rye and barley being grown in large quantities. The country also has rich deposits of timber, gold, diamonds and other minerals. Despite its wealth of natural resources, poverty levels remain high due to ongoing economic reforms and corruption in some areas. This has led to a lack of access to basic services such as healthcare and education for many citizens in rural areas. In recent years there have been efforts by NGOs and international organizations to improve socio-economic conditions through various initiatives such as providing access to clean water supplies, improving infrastructure and providing vocational training opportunities.
