Despite this progress, poverty remained widespread throughout much of Congo due to corruption and economic mismanagement by past governments as well as poor infrastructure and lack of resources. The country also has rich deposits of timber, gold, diamonds, uranium, and other minerals. Agriculture is another important sector in the Congolese economy with crops such as cassava, maize and plantains being grown in large quantities. Despite its natural resources, poverty levels remain high due to political instability and corruption. This has led to a lack of access to basic services such as health care and education for many citizens in rural areas.
