First part of the 20th century Two events played an important role in altering the isolation that Liberia had imposed on itself. The first was the concession in 1926 of a large plantation from the Firestone company. This event was a great step towards subjugating the Liberian economy. The second occurred during World War II, when […]

According to eningbo, in 2012, Liberia was a small West African country located on the Atlantic Ocean coast. With a population of more than 4 million people, the country had been an independent state since 1847 and was a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Like many other countries in the region, Liberia had long been plagued by political instability and violence due to civil wars and unrest. In addition, poverty levels were very high due to its weak economy which relied heavily on exports of iron ore and rubber as well as foreign aid and investment. The government had also been accused of corruption and human rights violations. In order to address these issues, the government had implemented various initiatives aimed at improving living standards for its citizens. These included welfare programs for job creation initiatives as well as infrastructure development projects such as building roads, bridges and schools. In addition, efforts were being made to promote economic growth by encouraging foreign direct investment and encouraging private sector development in sectors such as finance and technology. The government also sought to strengthen relations with neighboring countries through diplomatic efforts and regional cooperation initiatives such as joining ECOWAS. All these changes showed that Liberia had come a long way since independence but much work still needed to be done if it was going to continue on this path towards progress. Liberia in 2015 was a nation in transition. After two civil wars, the country was slowly beginning to rebuild and heal from the conflict and destruction. The economy had been severely impacted by the wars, but was slowly recovering with a focus on rebuilding infrastructure, creating jobs, and expanding economic opportunity. The country had adopted a market-based economy with an emphasis on private sector development. Agriculture was the primary economic driver, with approximately 75% of the population employed in farming or fishing-related activities. The government had made strides in improving the educational system since 2000, increasing enrollment rates at all levels of education and improving access to quality education for all citizens regardless of gender or income level. In 2015, Liberia’s literacy rate stood at 57%, up from 12% in 2000 and one of the highest rates in West Africa. Health care infrastructure also saw improvement during this period as investments were made to improve access to health services throughout the country. Despite these advances, Liberia still faced significant health challenges due to inadequate resources and funding as well as poor infrastructure including limited access to safe drinking water which resulted in high rates of waterborne diseases such as cholera and malaria. In terms of infrastructure, Liberia had a long way to go before it could come close to meeting its needs. Many roads were unpaved or poorly maintained due to lack of investment resulting in limited access particularly for those living in rural areas where poverty levels were more severe than average. Telecommunications infrastructure was also inadequate with limited access to reliable internet services outside major urban centers making it difficult for businesses or individuals located outside these areas to participate fully in an increasingly digital economy. Despite these challenges however there were signs that progress was being made throughout 2015 with new investments being made into various sectors including energy production, transportation networks and telecommunications services which would help lay a strong foundation for future growth and development within Liberia.
