The area to the northeast of Fiji and belonging to Polynesia includes the island groups Îles Wallis or Wallis Islands with the main island Uvea in the northeast and the Î les de Horn or Horn Islands in the southwest with the main islands Futuna and Alofi. The total area of Wallis and Futuna amounts to 274 square kilometers. The capital Mata Utu is located on the island of Wallis, where a little more than half of the total of 13,500 residents live.
The archipelago in the middle between Fiji and Samoa is made up of three main islands and about 20 small islands.
The largest island is Wallis, here is Mount Loka, which at 135 meters is the highest mountain on the island. Valais is of volcanic origin, which can still be seen today from the many small volcanic craters, most of which have become small lakes.
Futuna and the neighboring Alofi are about 230 kilometers southwest of Wallis. Futuna is far more mountainous than Wallis. The highest point on this island (and in the entire area) is Mont Singavi at 765 meters. Alofi, which is also uninhabited due to the lack of fresh water, is shaped like the other islands by wooded mountains, but mostly steep and sloping.
