Balmain

Quintessence of chic, sophisticated and seductive glamor toilet … is what defines Balmain, since its creation in 1945. Claw of record stars and royalty, it was long one of the competing Dior and Balenciaga, to death Pierre Balmain. It took until 2006 that, under the leadership of Christophe Decarnin, Balmain regain its aura of yesteryear…

It all starts with the birth of Pierre Balmain May 18, 1914 in Savoy. His parents run a large fabric store which employs many family members. Peter spends a happy childhood and pampered, between silk films and getaways in the mountains. His mother architect dream, he imagines couturier. At 11, he left home to enter the pension Chambéry, then continued his studies in Paris. It is drawing some costumes for the Lido that the young man decides to leave out the architecture in favor of fashion.

He then tried his luck with workshops of Mr. Molyneux, who takes the test, ending up hiring in 1934. Beside the most popular fashion of the time, Balmain is now a good school for her weapons. In 1939, he joined Lucien Lelong, where he developed his cutting technique. However, international events will stop his career: war is declared, it is called up. It will however be demobilized in 1940, and return to her parents.

It will take Lucien Lelong – passage in Savoie – come and ask him to take the reins of collections creation Lelong alongside the young Christian Diorfor Pierre Balmain decided to return to the capital. Despite the shortage and lack of means, Balmain wonders. One of his designs – a black crepe dress called “small profit” – will even be controlled by over 360 clients …

In 1945, the war is over and Pierre Balmain then decided to start his own, opening his own couture house. We owe him (and Balenciaga and Dior) the renewal of the high fashion of the postwar period. Very sharp creations from Balmain – where one feels the rigor and the eye of the former architect – seduce Parisians. In parallel, the designer develops flavors: in 1947, “Green Wind” will be the first of a long series. From 1953 to 1962, he will be joined a then unknown assistant of the general public: Karl Lagerfeld.

Soon, the style of the house Balmain, both bold and sophisticated, and designed for an active woman, elegant and eager to please, is emulated. It is the time of the launch of the fragrance “Pretty Lady”, the couturier and define: “The scent of adventure for passion nights and enchantment.” The writer Gertrude Stein then defines the key Balmain as the “New French Style”.

In 1956, Balmain has more than 600 employees, to meet the orders that keep coming to the workshops. Balmain toilets, perfectly balanced volumes, sophisticated details (and sometimes daring) have indeed become the favorite of all the jet set of the time. The designer then dress the elite celebrities: Marlene Dietrich, Michèle Morgan, Katharine Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Dalida…

His work also draws attention queens and princesses worldwide. The queens of Denmark, Belgium and that of Thailand commissioned him complete wardrobes. His popularity is such that makes him draw the uniforms of some airlines, as well as the costumes of 1968. Olympics in 1970, Balmain became a recognized reference internationally. He decided to get into the ready-to-wear. However, the Creator is suffering from an incurable disease and will go out in 1982, in full creative swing.

The master’s disappearance marks the beginning of the darkest hours for the house Balmain. Even if it’s his right arm (Erik Mortensen) who then took over the management of the house (and until 1990), the collections are no longer feeling. In 1992, Oscar de La Renta was appointed artistic director of the house. For 10 years, he will receive the brand of his talent. Its ultra sophisticated creations then reconnect with the stars, and seduce Liza Minnelli, Nancy Reagan, Ivana Trump, Jacky Onassis and Faye Dunaway.

However in 2002, Oscar de La Renta leaves the ship. Balmain then drift for 4 years … It was not until the arrival of the designer Christophe Decarnin(formerly of Paco Rabanne) for Balmain make again the joy of fashionistas. Christophe Decarnin, Balmain evokes “the evening dresses of princesses 1950s glamorous, and perfume Ivoire”. This he develops in his own way, focusing his work on the sewing evening.

While offering ultra-short creations, absolutely precious, between rock, glam and glitter, Decarnin respects fundamental of the house, based on a certain section of sobriety. First, it excludes daywear, focuses its work on the refinement of the night and thus restores its elitist Balmain chili.

In some seasons, the designer has managed to synthesize the legacy of Pierre Balmain and to modernize the image of the house plebiscite extra short lengths very evening, and aristo-rock style in keeping with the energetic woman of today ‘ hui, embodied (according to him) by Kate Moss. Proof of its success, Christophe Decarnin managed to reconnect with the stars. Celine Dion, Audrey Tautou, Marion Cotillard and Gwyneth Paltrow recently and clearly display their addiction to micro dresses jewelry claw…
